Default Shit on St. Patrick's day

Some of you know, some of you don't so I'll go into the medium-length story.

My mother, several years ago was diagnoses with bladder cancer. As she recovered she was told she has COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease; better known as emphysema). She was told to quit smoking, take her breathing treatments, and be on oxygen 24/7. She sometimes did her treatments, put herself on oxygen at night, and continued to smoke. She has had many hospital visits over the last few years with them becoming more frequent in recent months.

Fast forward to Friday, March 4th 2011. She went to visit her doctor and walked in without oxygen on and her doctor got very upset with her. My mother went home after her visit. On sunday we were to have my nephew's birthday party, and it was to be at my mom's house. We are not entirely sure what happened on Saturday night, but we are assuming that my mother stressed herself out about the party, causing her to need more oxygen, which she couldn't absorb because she has COPD, which caused her anxiety and most likely a panic attack. At approximately midnight sunday morning she called 911 and was taken by ambulance to CDH (1/2 a mile from her home). She was talking when she went in but she had another panic attack and they couldn't get her to calm down; they had to intubate her. After she was intubated, she was brought to ICU and my family was contacted. I went to visit he a couple of times. The general consensus from the doctors was that we needed approximately 10 days to see if her condition approved. Every day they would take her off of sedation and take her off the breathing machine as well, to see if her CO2 levels would not increase beyond a safe limit. Every day she could not do it. By the 14th we were all visiting more often, consulting with doctors, between ourselves. My brother and his family flew in from Colorado, and my cousin flew in from London on the 16th. On the 14th, 15th, and 16th my mother was taken off of sedation enough to be coherent and the doctor had the discussion with her that she cannot stay on life support forever and she had to decide if she wanted to get a tracheotomy or get taken off the life support and see what happens but the outcome in not in her favor. All 3 times she was woken up she decided the same way; she did not want to fight for a glimmer of hope of a life less than satisfactory for her. On March 16th She put her life into God's hands while putting a rosary in her own, the feeding tube was removed at 2pm and the breathing tube at 4pm. For the next 17 hours my mother made her peace with the world and calmly slipped away at approximately 9:15 yesterday morning.

Why the title of this thread? Only my mother would say "fuck the Irish" and shit on St. Patrick's day by dying on it; it was also bright and sunny until just after her passing - then it was dreary and cloudy. I guess it's an inside joke with the family.

I know none of you knew her, or at least you don't think you do. However her influence in my life has made me what I am so you kind of do.

So, my life's been a little occupied of recent. I do thank everyone who sent text messages and messages on FB.

You don't have to flinch for me to know that you're scared.

You're going to get sick of hearing if if you aren't already, but I'm very sorry to hear of your loss Bryan. I took it kinda rough when I lost my dad and can understand the hurt you feel. If you need anything brother, just ask.

Sorry for your loss....I lost my mother 1 year ago today. Pretty much the same way. She was told to quit smoking and didnt listen. She did have us fooled thinking she quit by hiding it but her habit was to hard for her to break. I still miss her to this day and remember the good times to help me get thruogh it.

Condolences to you and your family.
At least she went in her own way and with dignity intact.

Sorry to hear of your loss Bryan. My heart goes out to you and your family.

If you ever need cheering up. Do what I do. Go find your kid(s), and just watch them for five minutes. No mater what their up to, you will be happy again.

P.S. my mom is on a track close to your moms, except on my moms track they roll their own cigarettes.

Bryan, all the words I came up with seemed pretty insignificant and hollow. I am extremely sorry for your loss.
