Default WWII Airshows

I was going to add this to Bryan's Non-Snowmobile related picture thread but figured it deserved its own thread.

For a while I was into WWII airshows and would try to hit a few a year. I met some pretty interesting people who were speakers at these shows.

These were the two most important IMO.

Paul Tibbits - Pilot of the Enola Gay who dropped the first atomic bomb.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paul_Tibbets

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Enola_Gay

And Theodore "Dutch" Van Kirk was the navigator of the Enola Gay and on other top secret missions.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Theodore_Van_Kirk

_____________________________________________

I got to shake their hands, talk to them, got them to autograph a picture etc. I also me a bunch of the Tuskegee Airmen, Robert Morgan - Pilot of the Memphis Belle, and survivors of WWII. Good times and an awesome experience to talk to some people who will always be a part of American History.

Fife is the ONLY air worthy B-29 in existence and I got to see her fly before she was grounded in 2006.

Here are some pics I have on the computer. I had a lot of still shots that were destroyed when my basement flooded.

LOL. I haven't been to one since I moved to IL and will have to check into it. I think there is one in Oshkosh, WI.

I got to fly in a T6 Trainer for a 30 minute ride... that was fun.

+1 Same for me Keith. I enjoy that stuff alot also. My Grandfather was a pilot in WWII and was stationed on Guam. That is where the Enola Gay took off from, but non of them knew it at the time.

They even changed the tail sign to confuse the Japanese. It was normally a circle with an arrow and he changed it to a Big letter R for the mission.

Keith...you idiot. The one in Oshkosh is the biggest fly-in in the world. You wanna go?

My wife is a Chairman for EAA, her father runs the museum up there. They are both up there running the flightline the entire show. How many thousands of pictures do you want to see?

No July-early august....no its not all WW2, but the majority of the "shows" each day are war birds. You can walk around and look at planes all day long.

They have some different stuff every year but the war birds are always their, just their special planes for the year change. They had that private plane that went into orbit, they have had the black bird there a few times, tons of other cool stuff. But the war birds are awesome. They will have some old guy telling stories. Hell I cant say for sure he really even flew, but he tells cool stories. The one I sat and listened too was when he was in WW2 flying the mustang and came across his first set of German jets

No just use the tools you have in front of you instead of depending on someone else to remember for you ......

This is an old thread but figured this video sums up some of the cool stuff you'll see at an air show. I didn't get to one this summer like I wanted but will try next year.

My dad has a '66 Cessna 150. I grew up in the passenger seat of that thing when ew weren't in the tractor. Farming isn't the only thing he's passed along.

After WWII, I know my great Grandpa had an opportunity and picked up a couple pristine crated Mustangs. I believe they were $2,500 a piece, but were sold for scrap almost immediately after he got them.

While I'm not perfectly educated on the history of aircraft...I absolutely love them.

Oshkosh is fricking awesome. It happens every year. It is bigger than Haydays, so plan a minimum of two days if you want to see the majority of anything.

the "sturges" of airplanes. Locals go on vacation and rent there homes for enough to pay 1/2 the years mortgage. if you think your spending the night it is already to late to book a room.
they bring in special air controlers to cover the extra traffic.
Some one told me they will land 2 planes at once. something that needs most of the runway with something that need a short runway coming in right behind it.
